This Inexpensive Oil May Hold the Key to Brighter, Healthier Hair

Craving longer, healthier locks? Hair growth is a surprisingly common problem, and there are a variety of products — from vitamins and serums to oils — that promise to deliver those Rapunzel-like hair.

One of the most touted ones today is castor oil. This inexpensive and widely available oil is a vegetable oil derived from castor beans, says board-certified dermatologist Audrey Kunin. “It’s rich in ricinoleic acid, a nourishing, moisturizing fatty acid.”

William Gaunitz, a FWTS-certified trichologist and founder of Advanced Trichology, said that despite its growing popularity, especially in applications such as hair growth, it is an oil that has been used in a variety of topical and cosmetic applications. for thousands of years.

But is it worth picking up a bottle and applying it regularly? Does it actually help stimulate hair follicles to provide the real, tangible results you’re looking for?

Does Castor Oil Promote Hair Growth?
The short – and, admittedly, rather unsatisfactory – answer? Maybe.

There’s no evidence that castor oil applied to the scalp or hair will directly help promote hair growth, Kunin said. Instead, castor oil can indirectly help hair grow, Gunitz says.

“It has many anti-inflammatory properties, including high levels of omega 6 and 9 and vitamin E,” he explains. Because of this, regular use—especially in conjunction with other proven products from a dermatologist or trichologist—can produce positive hair growth results, says Gaunitz.

But it shouldn’t be relied upon in all cases. He explained that while castor oil is very helpful in helping hair regrowth in people with inflammatory alopecia, it has little effect on severe male or female pattern baldness and nutritional baldness.

How often should you apply castor oil?
If you fall into the former category, or just want to use the oil to reap the benefits of improved scalp health and smoother, healthier-looking hair, apply the oil 2 to 3 times a week, says Gaunitz. In some severe cases, you can use castor oil daily, but it should be mixed with 50 percent coconut oil because the product can create a sticky buildup, he adds.

It’s a simple process: just put a few drops into your hands and gently massage the oil into your scalp. Let the oil sit for 45 minutes to an hour. Then, wash your hair and scalp with your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

Can you leave castor oil in your hair overnight?
The biggest benefit, please! While you can technically leave castor oil on your hair overnight, leaving any oil on your hair overnight or for more than four hours should only be done intermittently, Gunitz says. “After four to six hours, the oil breaks down and begins to collect dead skin cells and debris, leading to possible inflammation.”

How long does it take for castor oil to work?
Within 15 to 30 minutes of application, castor oil begins to reduce inflammation and imbalanced microbes, including fungi and bacteria, and provide moisturizing omega fats, Gunitz says.

However, when it comes to hair growth, you have to dig deeper for more patience. “For those who will benefit, I usually see positive results after six to eight weeks of use,” he said.

Still, it’s important to note that the results don’t last forever. Continued use is required to maintain the benefits of castor oil, Gunitz adds.

Our place has launched a new ovenware that deserves as much hype as Always Pan

Our Place is known for its beloved Always Pan – and now its Perfect Pot and recent collaboration with Selena Gomez. The brand just released an ovenware set that adds something new to your kitchen to help you cook, bake and roast in style.

The new line of non-toxic, non-stick pans includes five pieces: oven pans, oven mats, main roast, side roast and small roast. While they’re designed for your oven, you can even use them on the stovetop for skillet-style situations. In true Our Place form, the brand has considered how they will affect your storage space and has combined all the pieces together for easy stacking.

Oven pan: a versatile pan large enough for family dinners and dinner parties, or even baking cakes

Oven Mat: A reusable mat, 1″ square, for measuring and spacing baked goods

Main Bake: A pan perfect for baking lasagna

Side Bake: A pan perfect for side dishes

Tiny Bake: bread-sized pans for cooking and baking

These cooking essentials are available in Our Place’s five signature colors: Spice (blush), Blue Salt (blue), Steam (off-white), Sage (green) and Charcoal (dark gray). You can purchase your ovenware set online starting June 22. Your order includes all five pieces – a good thing, because how can we choose just one or two? – for $195.

“Cooking in the oven can be intimidating, but using the right tools is actually quite simple. When approaching oven cooking and baking, we bring our signature innovative and beautiful design to this part of the kitchen. Our ovenware is designed to make cooking and gathering easier and more fun. We hope this set will inspire everyone to share nutritious meals with loved ones,” said Shiza Shahid, co-founder of Our Place, in press materials.

8 Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Month trends to know now

Crystal products
People almost needed sunglasses and the catwalks were lit up with eye-catching sparkles all season long. Crystal dresses, skirts, wide-legged trousers and Khaite’s suit lapels literally lit up our Spring/Summer ’23 outlook. Blame it on our need to capture everything on Instagram, but we can’t argue with the fact that shiny numbers certainly make for good content these days.

The seduction factor
I see London, I see France, I see everyone’s underwear. This will be the vibe for Spring/Summer 23 as we all throw away our caution about the wind and embrace the sultry sheer dresses that leave nothing to the imagination. Designers include Longman’s
Bruno Sialelli, Miuccia & Raf, Alberta Ferretti and Marcelo Gaia of Mirror Palais all opted for the sheer route, from maxi dresses to trench coats. Which makes sense when you think about it, as there is an undeniable sense of freedom, chutzpah and sensuality to these pieces – what more could we want after years of rigid rules, confinement and bleakness. For a more modest moment, Tory Burch’s 90s-inspired midi slip skirts with their and sheer tops will surely be on many people’s wish lists.

While this may sound like something a TV presenter would shout before a contestant is dipped in slime, we’re actually referring to the mix of glamour and grunge that has been prevalent over the past decade. If you close your eyes and think about it, you can instantly conjure up an image of this girl/guy: with layers of flattering staples, covered up with a squared-off biker jacket, coat or blazer. Those Y2K gas station shades seem to be everywhere, along with spiked hardware and silver jewellery. Perhaps the sleeves of the jumpsuit extend into the gloves and the trousers seem to connect seamlessly with their platform boots. Perhaps this person befriended Julia Fox. This season, as usual, there was plenty for her/him/them at Rick Owens and Balenciaga (just watch out for the appearance of Lay’s crisp bag purse), but also at LAPOINTE, Versace and even Saint Laurent, where we reckon they’ll be swiping on slick hoodies, round shoulders jackets and high-gloss embellishments.

Skirting the Issue

Let’s talk about skirts – for once, I would say that skirts seemed to be the focus of most of the collection. This is down to the popularity of the Miu Miu mini skirt last year, but this time around skirts seem to be getting a lot of attention and reinvention. While on paper they may not be the most practical, the pannier-esque silhouette (like the hoop skirts worn in the 17th and 18th centuries) won us over thanks to what Lanvin, Bach Mai, Monse, Loewe and Dior did with them. Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu had pocketed designs, while elsewhere, calf-length jeans, leather and skirts with foam hemlines looked like they would topple the mini skirt off its pedestal. Another trend to look out for: pair your best skirts with your plainest tops! Now we can all try it at home…

Fringe Benefits

How we love a good swish. From skirts and dresses to fringe-trimmed tops, everything seems to be ‘swishing’ and swinging this season, and the effect is particularly evident at Proenza Schouler, PatBo, Jonathan Simkhai, Jil Sander and Bottega Veneta. Listen to us to get the full effect!

Luxe Exotica

Snakeskin is slithering its way back into our watchlist, and we can definitely blame Khaite for that. Elsewhere, we noticed high octane animal-meets-metallic numbers that we’re christening Luxe Exotica. All eyes on you: guaranteed.

Optimistic Hues

While fuchsia continues to be present here and soothing pastel biscuit colours seem to prevail on the most fashionable (see: Lanvin, Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta, etc.), we do feel our hearts beating because of all the sunny yellow, turquoise, lilac and green shades that induce nervousness in us. The latter, in particular, is known to be a lucky colour. Get it where you can get it, children.

Precious Cargos

So why is the massive obsession with all things Y2K stopping anytime soon? Add cargo pants to the install list. With products in a variety of shades and fabrics, before you know it, you’ll be starring in your very own home R N’B music video.

Cher closes Balmain show

Perhaps the biggest moment of fashion month so far was Cher’s appearance on the runway at Balmain’s Paris show yesterday. The icon appeared at Olivier Rousteing in a skintight, marbled black bodysuit with bold shoulders and matching leggings. As one does at 76.

“The Balmain Festival is the brand’s annual celebration of beautiful possibilities by combining the best of music and fashion,” Rousteing explained. “So, to end this year’s festival, we thought There is no better artist than Cher. After all, she has been showing everyone since the 60’s how powerful these two arts can be when combined. I know we have to have Cher with us today This year’s festive season can’t be completed without a catwalk. Also, as my team and I prepare to launch Balmain’s new line of Blaze luxury leather bags—which, as the name suggests, is directly inspired by the spirit of the intrepid trailblazer—we’re delighted that the ultimate trailblazer, Cher ( Cher, will help us introduce this new collection to the public.”

Cher, who was clearly having a good time, tweeted afterward that she had the best time and that it was “probably the best fashion show ever.”

Kanye changes Instagram avatar to Kris Jenner’s photo

Kanye West is at it again! The Yeezy designer swapped his Instagram profile picture for one of Kris Jenner, which he called a peace offering to his former mother-in-law. “I posted Kris with peace and respect for [sic] to change the narrative,” he wrote on his Instagram story. West recently lashed out at Jenner and the Kardashians. He later apologized.

Ryan Gosling stars in Gucci’s Valigeria campaign

Actor Ryan Gosling (and a lot of luggage) was the star of the Gucci Valigeria campaign, shot by Glen Luchford and stylisted by Mel Ottenberg. “Gucci’s travel has never been purely physical,” explains creative director Alessandro Michele. “Gucci is the brand that accompanies Hollywood artists, writers, actors and directors on their journeys…that’s why I wanted the campaign to retell the dimension of Situationism, where the main character first travels through a ‘non-place’ a spiritual place, like the past and the present Like those who choose Gucci because they understand the importance of creativity used to construct imaginative spaces. It is for this reason that Gucci suitcases are magic suitcases.”

Money Snapshot. A Washington, D.C. suburban attorney shares thoughts on student loans and rental properties

In today’s Money Snapshot, we talk salary, net worth, debt, and more with reader V in suburban Washington, D.C., who works as a lawyer for a public company. “My husband worked for a large law firm for six years; it allowed us to pay off our school debt and save for a down payment. We didn’t buy our first home until we were 32,” she noted.

We’ve had requests from some readers to launch our own “money diary” series, so we’re asking would-be readers to fill out a form with lots of details about debts, spending, savings, etc. If you want to fill out the form and be To be considered for inclusion in future personal money snapshots, please click here to submit your responses If you would like to review these questions ahead of time, you can see the questions in PDF format. See other questions in the Personal Money Snapshot series.

Remember, this is a real person who has feelings and gets nothing out of it, unlike your usual friendly (soul-destroying, thick-skinned, cold-hearted, money-loving) blogger – so please be kind to any comments. thank you – Kate

name. V
Location: MCOL MCOL; D.C./DMV Suburbs
Age: 37
Profession. Attorney for a public company
Income: $167,000 + 15% bonus + $66,000 in rental income
Family: Husband, 36, government lawyer (former barrister) and two children
Household Income: $409,000
Family assets: $1.5 million
Net worth at the start of work. At 25, my husband and I have negative $300k in student loans
Living condition. Own house; $3,000 monthly mortgage

What is your debt situation?
Mortgage only. I have a $3000/month mortgage on my main residence. I have a second mortgage on a rental property [$4500, including taxes] — tenant borne.

How much do you spend each month to pay off debt?
The interest on our mortgage is low so I pay the bare minimum.

How did you pay for your tuition?
Those sweet Biglaw dollars and scholarships — I worked in college and law school, and so did my husband. I went to public school on a full scholarship and graduated early.

household debt. Share your theories and strategies with us (including any reasons why you are renting instead of buying).
Our primary residence has a 30 year 2.75% mortgage. Everything felt more affordable when we moved from San Francisco to Washington DC. I’m very focused on spending less than $700,000. We prioritize living in the city center, which means our house is small and old. I absolutely love it–but I wish we could spend the money to fit into our lives (and more kids!) 10 years from now.

Have you paid off any major debts?
Yes! We paid off about $300,000 in debt. We paid off about $300k in law school debt (+ husband’s private college). We lived on my lesser salary and used my husband’s entire barrister salary and bonus to pay off debts. I snowballed smaller loans for some feel-good wins.

Have you done anything worth mentioning to avoid or reduce debt?
In the first five years we worked, we made a lot of money and Dinks, just living very frugally.

Best suits of the week:Nordstrom

For busy working women, a suit is often the easiest thing to put on in the morning. Generally speaking, this feature is not about women’s interview suits, which should be the most classic and basic — instead, this feature is about slightly different suits that are stylish and professional.

There are so many great suits on sale at Nordstrom’s anniversary sale, we’ve given them their own post. But while many are sold out, or down to lucky sizes, this affordable suit (available in pink and black) still comes in many sizes.

I like the cinched waist, and simple pants. I’ve noticed some bad reviews pointing out that the pockets turn out on your hips – since we’re returning to the trend of long and straight pants, I doubt we’ll see more of these sloping hip pockets. My $2 if you like something other than the pockets of a pair of pants: if they’re sewn, keep them sewn — you can also sew them yourself (or have a tailor do them).

The blazer is available in black and pink in sizes XXS-XXL; it’s listed for $119 during NAS, but will go back to $179 when the sale ends on July 30. The pants are available in sizes 00-16W. The pants are listed for $65, but will be $99 after the sale ends.
