“American Gigolo” and Blondie’s memorable soundtrack provided fertile ground for Victoria Beckham, who this season is considering the film’s star and “the woman who owns it,” Lauren Hutton. But this is not a trip down memory lane, nor is it a tribute to Giorgio Armani, who dressed Richard Gere for the film. “It’s more of a vibe, an attitude,” Beckham says.

She worked closely with her new design team and served as a try-on model, trying on every production sample – something her growing fan base is sure to love. They blended Houghton’s strong character with Beckham’s own desire to wear short styles again, and took a chance on brighter colors and unexpected textures.

“Six months ago, if someone had told me I’d be wearing a shiny, frilly pink jersey, I would have thought they were crazy,” Beckham said. What a difference six months can make: One of her best looks was a slim pink dress with a diagonal neckline and ruffles around the tights that enhanced the model’s curves.

There was also a shiny green dress, although it was looser, above the knee and had ruffle details rather than pleats. Beckham said, “The neck can be done and untucked, and the draped pleats make it look and feel very feminine.”

She also pondered how to “short” again – but in a post-big-pop way. She and a team now led by design director Lara Barrio reportedly worked on proportions: short skirts that skim the waist but don’t hug it too tightly, wider shoulders and boots that are thigh-high.

“We were concerned with balance, movement and texture. The new shapes aren’t too tight or too four-sided,” Beckham says.

She paired these short styles with tailored trenches à la Hutton and Gere, giving them strong shoulders and plenty of attitude. Beckham’s new bag collection plays a strong supporting role, especially with clutches and shoulder bags. Their chunky gold strap chains shine and beckon.

Beckham says she finally feels “settled” from a design perspective with the addition of Barrio and the new team, describing the collection as “a flag in the sand. She is excited about the future, and most importantly, she owns it.
