World Ethnic Day – Craftsvilla

With World Ethnicity Day coming up on June 19, I’m excited to collaborate with Craftsvilla to show you my “ethnic” side. While I don’t really believe in the concept of borders and boundaries, I originally belong to Haryana and women traditionally wear “ghagris” (a short version of ghagra that ends around the calf) with a long shirt/kurta. I wanted to share a version with you to celebrate World Nations Day. I certainly modified the look – the bottom is a Banarasi silk jacquard Lehenga (longer) with a plain white shirt, which I tucked into the lehenga, and the dupatta is tied to the shirt to continue the color story of the upper which is part of the outfit rather than the white and color of the stark contrast.

I do prefer to wear lehengas rather than saris because they are easier to handle, walk around, and even sit for me personally, so I was very happy that traditionally Haryana women wear similar clothes rather than saris (yuck!). . It also makes me happy to celebrate my roots! I’m all for celebrating one’s race as long as you do so without disturbing or disturbing those around you, fashion lets you do that, don’t you think!
